Rescue & Heal

Restored

Due to poverty and injuries to parents caused by landmines, many children on the border must labor in the fields in order to help their family survive. They live day to day, struggling just to have enough food for the night. In this family the dad’s leg was blown off by a landmine. The 11 year old son said, “I have to be the man now and support my family because my mom is too old, and if I don’t work, we won’t eat.”

When we heard this family’s story and why the children weren’t attending school, we immediately talked to the family. We supported the boy to go to school, took the dad across the border to get a prosthetic leg, and supplied the family with enough food and rice to allow the father’s leg to heal before going back to work.

Not only did the father regain his dignity as the provider of his home, but the children can now have a normal life of going to school with their friends instead of spending their childhood in the fields.
